Gondu/Gondi is a tribe who lives in India. In this post I will mainly talk about Gondi who live in Telangana region.
Most of the Gondi we can find in Telangana are in Adilabad(Olden) District. Their Mother Tongue is “Gondu”. Gondu eventually became close to Telugu. Now many people from Gondu can speak Telugu. Gondi ruled in four kingdoms (Garha Mandla Deogarh, Chanda, and Kherla) in central India between the 16th and 18th centuries. They built number of forts, palaces, temples during the rule of the Gonds dynasty. Then later on it is said that Maratha Rajas overthrew them.
CULTURE: Things I found are … These people believe that tattooing makes humans look beautiful. I find it similar to most Indian girls applying mehandi on hands. They are very good in cultural activities like singing, daancing etc.., Gondu people are very famous for there Folk songs.
A Gond attire contains a stick used to dance which is undertaken by young people. groups of young people travel from village to village as a band, dancing and singing. The dancing is a religious duty. It is also an occasion for fun.
Hereditary bards and professional storytellers called Pardhans tell stories about Gond legends and myths. This makes for a rich oral tradition. In these stories, it is said that when Gond gods were born, their mother abandoned them.
Gonds have a rich arts tradition that includes pottery, basket making, floor painting and bdy tattooing.
Gonds make musical instruments. They carve memorial pillars in wood and stone for their dead. They often decorate houses with carved doors and panels.
RELIGION: Village priests are called as “Devari”.
Most aspects of Gond life, from the greatest festivals to the building of a new cattle shed, are accompanied by sacrifice. Certain deities, especially female ones, demand chickens, goats, and sometimes male buffaloes. Every nine or twelve years, Gonds sacrifice a pig to the god Narayan Deo in an important ceremony known as the Laru Kaj. Other rituals also involve offerings of fruits, coconuts, flowers.
FESTIVALS: Many Gondi festivals are connected to Agriculture. For example: Pola, a cattle festival, Naga panchami, a snake centered festival.
PAINTINGS: Gondu paintings materialize like a collage of a dashes and dots. This collages contains plants, animals and articulating folklores. Signiture styles form essence. They are employed intrinsically for filling the ornamental motifs and patterns of the surface.
Their colours are derived from natural sources only. For example lime stone and charcoal are used for several ornamental paintings.
