About The India Report: It is written by Charles and Ray Ealmes, an American Industrialist couple who came to India shortly after “The Independence”, on request of then Prime Minister, Sri Jawaharlal Nehru. The lines along which this report is written surround the basic problems faced by then-India such as providing basic amenities of food, shelter to majority of population. The report is very well writ, providing with ways to identify the problem and face those problems. They both stayed in India for three months which can be observed from their understanding of India’s culture.

The above lines are found in the report’s starting. The citation from a book which is considered to be holy-text by millions, increases the credibility and the meaning is conveyed to the audience with authority.
The report is divided into two parts. The first part discusses with how the quality of everyday things can be improved. Certain programme of educating, training in area of design to make up a “standard of living” is proposed. The following disciplines are to work together for this purpose:

Certain number of staff should be from these disciplines to make the process of design complete. India had the immediate problems like food, shelter, districution and population, and this problem is taken as an advantage as the priorities of the nation were well-defined for the time being and there was a huge scope of originality in work was expected. Example of Lota is taken as a metaphor where we see how the vessel was developed through ages and what all materials have been experimented. The comparison of Lota is made indirectly with all other designs which can be made, evolved and improved upon.
The second part of the report talks about the institute. In this part, the objectives, the functions, research, the size, the effectiveness of the institute is mentioned. Different aspects of the insitute are the students or trainees, the faculty/staff, the projects/methods, aspects of service and the physical plant. And each of those aspects are discussed to get a clear idea about what the institute should be all about.
After the Bauhaus, this could be the new “Big-thing” at international or atleast at national level. Such a design school can change all the things which we buy, use and consume. From the quality of furniture to the general-architecture of all the buildings, from vessels and utensils to national events, everything can be considered as design and each of them can be improved.
