Nowadays, several Design Schools are opening up across different parts of India and our society is getting more and more aware about the word DESIGN. But have you ever thought about how it all started? Why was a Design School required at the first place? Don’t worry guys.. you will get answers to the above questions in this blog.
During 1950s, India was going through rapid industrialization and the Govt. of India felt an urgent need of design institution which could serve as an AID TO SMALL INDUSTRIES and hence the Govt. of India requested Charles Eames and Ray Eames for some recommendation on the above told issue.
Charles and Ray, both visited India for three months, explored the problems of design and studied various centres of design, handicrafts. As a result of their discussion emerged THE INDIA REPORT in 1958 and became a stepping stone for NID(National Institute of Design), Ahemdabad and design education in India.
THE INDIA REPORT
You have the right to work but for the work’s sake only; you have no right to the fruits of work. Desire for the fruits of work must never be your motive in working. Never give way to laziness, either.
They who work selfishly for results are miserable.
The report begins with quote from Bhagavad Gita, focusing on the importance of work for its own sake rather than for a selfish interest in results.
The report recommended an institute of design, research and service which would also act an advanced training medium. The institute should act as a medium to spread awareness across the country about the problems inherent in everyday lives.
Both Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by everyday objects like the lota and the matka (spherical water vessels). It symbolized a necessary contemporary attitude, one “that will appraise and solve the problems of our coming times with the same tremendous service, dignity and love that the Lota served its time.” The report suggests that designers could act as a bridge between traditions and modernity.
The report also focuses on the kinds of faculty, trainees, projects, service aspects, and physical plant the design center required in detail.
