The Eames report sheds light on what went into making of India’s best design schools. It tells us about the planning needed, framing aims and objectives and also taking a systems approach to designing of an educational institution.

The most interesting part of the reports for me was the analogy of the institute with a Lota. The report suggests that it is trying to establish an institute which shall serve as a way to hasten the production of our lotas. It seeks to develop an attitude of paying attention to every small detail and solving problems the same way the lota did.

It talks about the faculty being such that it brings together different people from different parts of the country who solve problems collectively. It warns against hiring of people who are taking up the job for the sake of “putting their creative hat on”. The core of the team is made up of architects and designers passionate about the message of the institution.

The report also mentions projects which may be given to students. These projects are designed such that it involves the use of the expertise of all the faculty in the institute. Some of it dealing with extensive study of existing infrastructure and some involving studying history of the subject matter. The most interesting project to me was “Project A” which asks a research question as to what constitutes as “standard of living” in India. This project is most suitable for a design school proposed as it involves an overall look into the needs of the society hence it requires inputs from many different schools of thought which is the kind of faculty that Eames propose to be recruited in the institute. This was an interesting read because it showed that everything works as a system with the projects being in service to the students and faculty and vice versa.

I feel this report is still very relevant in today’s world. The same considerations have to still be taken into account while designing not only for the education sector, but for anything in general. The Eames’ Report focuses on the method by identification of the requirements and problems and then successively solving them by making it into various layers of students, faculty and academics. The way they plan out the structure of the institute is symbolic of any design process followed by designers. Thus this report can be seen as a good insight into the design process and how details of elements are important to be considered to make the design sustainable

All in all, I found the report to be a great introduction to designing with a system in mind. The way everything connected to each other in the end was a great testament to Eames’ design prowess.
